Fence Rules & Permits in Chino Hills, CA

A few things to consider before you install a fence in Chino Hills. These are general guidelines — always confirm current requirements with the City before you start.

Front Yard Height
Fences and walls within the front yard setback of a single-family home are limited to 4 feet, and front-yard hedges are held to the same limit. Up to 6 feet is possible when the portion above 3 feet uses an open material such as tubular steel, but that taller version requires a Minor Exception reviewed by the City.

Side & Rear Yard Height
Along side and rear property lines, fences and walls may go up to 6 feet — the usual height for a backyard privacy wall. Fences and walls also need a gate or other suitable opening at least 30 inches wide.

When You Need a Permit
No building permit is required for a fence 6 feet or under, or for a retaining wall no taller than 4 feet measured from the bottom of the footing that is not supporting a surcharge. On the planning side, anything over 4 feet in the front yard setback needs a Minor Exception application.

Corner Lots & Sight Lines
A clear corner area protects sight lines at intersections and driveways, and nothing above 30 inches may be placed or allowed to grow inside it. At an uncontrolled intersection that area is measured 45 feet back along the curb lines; at a driveway, 15 feet.

If your home is part of an HOA, check your community's CC&Rs before installing — many HOAs add their own material and height rules on top of the City's. Building a pool or spa? California's Pool Safety Act (Health & Safety Code §115922–115923) requires at least two independent, approved drowning-prevention features, such as a 60-inch enclosure.
