A few things to consider before you install a fence in La Puente. These are general guidelines — always confirm current requirements with the City before you start.

Front Yard Height
La Puente limits solid fences and walls in the front yard setback to 42 inches, or 48 inches for wrought iron and similar designs that are at least 50 percent open. Chain link, chicken wire, barbed or razor wire, plywood, corrugated panels, and thin reed or bamboo are prohibited fencing materials in residential zones, and wood fences are banned along major corridors such as Hacienda Boulevard, Amar Road, and Valley Boulevard.

Side & Rear Yard Height
Interior side yards and rear yards may be fenced up to 7 feet, and the street-side yard of a corner lot up to 6 feet. A retaining wall in a side or rear yard may also be 7 feet, topped by an open fence up to 7 feet or by a solid fence as long as the combined height stays at 7 feet. Both sides of every fence must be finished.

When You Need a Permit
Every fence or wall needs a Zoning Clearance from Planning before a building permit is issued, and anything taller than the standard limits requires a Minor Use Permit. Building permits follow the Los Angeles County Building Code that La Puente adopts, which exempts fences 6 feet and under but requires a permit for taller fences and for retaining walls over 4 feet.

Corner Lots & Sight Lines
Corner lots must keep a vision clearance triangle open at the intersection, 15 feet along each property line from the corner, and 5 feet where a driveway or alley meets the street, with nothing taller than 42 inches above the curb inside it. The same 42-inch cap applies within 5 feet of a driveway exiting onto a side street, and on a reverse corner lot to any solid fence within 10 feet of the rear corner.

If your home is part of an HOA, check your community's CC&Rs before installing — many HOAs add their own material and height rules on top of the City's. Building a pool or spa? California's Pool Safety Act (Health & Safety Code §115922–115923) requires at least two independent, approved drowning-prevention features, such as a 60-inch enclosure.
