A few things to consider before you install a fence in Irvine. These are general guidelines — always confirm current requirements with the City before you start.

Within the front setback, fences and walls are limited to 2½ feet at the property line, stepping up 1 foot for every 3 feet of setback, to a maximum of 7 feet.

Outside the required setback, side and rear fences and walls can reach up to 7 feet.

A permit is required for any new or replacement fence or wall. Fences over 7 feet within a required setback need additional Administrative Relief approval.

Within the sight triangle at street intersections, fences and walls are limited to 2½ feet, per the City's Engineering Standard Plan 403.
