Local Guidelines
Fence Rules & Permits in San Gabriel, CA

A few things to consider before you install a fence in San Gabriel. These are general guidelines — always confirm current requirements with the City before you start.

📏
Front Yard Height
In San Gabriel's residential zones, any fence or wall between the front of the house and the front lot line is limited to 4 feet and must sit at least 30 inches back from the front property line, with that strip landscaped. Ornamental screening walls up to 6 feet are allowed in the front yard, but only set back at least 15 feet, no longer than 20 feet, and at least 5 feet from any driveway.
🧱
Side & Rear Yard Height
Fences and walls along the rear lot line, and along side lines from the rear forward to the front of the house, may be 6 feet, and rear-yard property-line fences on interior and corner lots may go to 7 feet 6 inches. On a corner lot, anything over 4 feet may not extend into the street-side yard past the main building, and where the lot backs onto a key lot the line is set by that neighbor's front building corner.
📋
When You Need a Permit
San Gabriel deleted the state exemptions for fences up to 7 feet and retaining walls up to 4 feet from its adopted building code, so a building permit is required for any new fence, wall or retaining wall regardless of height. Plan on a permit and plan check through Building and Safety, and have Planning confirm the location and height first, since the front-setback, corner and key-lot rules all apply.
🚦
Corner Lots & Sight Lines
San Gabriel's corner rule is one of the strictest in the San Gabriel Valley: any fence or wall along the front or side line of a corner lot within 35 feet of where those lines meet is limited to 2 feet, measured from the top of the adjacent curb. The Police Chief and Community Development Director can also declare an existing corner fence a traffic hazard and require it to be brought into compliance.
Good to Know
If your home is part of an HOA, check your community's CC&Rs before installing — many HOAs add their own material and height rules on top of the City's. Building a pool or spa? California's Pool Safety Act (Health & Safety Code §115922–115923) requires at least two independent, approved drowning-prevention features, such as a 60-inch enclosure. Fence codes can change, so we always recommend confirming current requirements with the San Gabriel Community Development Department before you start. Have questions about your property? Contact Legacy Fence and we'll help you sort it out.
