Local Guidelines
Fence Rules & Permits in Walnut, CA

A few things to consider before you install a fence in Walnut. These are general guidelines — always confirm current requirements with the City before you start.

📏
Front Yard Height
Walnut keeps front yards low: any wall, fence, or hedge in the required front yard is limited to 3 feet, measured along the street side. Behind the front setback line the allowance jumps to 6 feet. The code defines a fence as at least 50 percent open and a wall as more than half solid, and either style may be used in the front yard within that 3-foot limit.
🧱
Side & Rear Yard Height
Interior side and rear yards may be fenced up to 6 feet. Where a retaining wall holds fill, its height counts toward that 6 feet, though a protective fence up to 42 inches may sit on top, and anything above 6 feet must be open-work with no more than half the surface solid. The Planning Commission can approve taller fences through site plan review when view, light, and drainage impacts check out.
📋
When You Need a Permit
Walnut adopts the Los Angeles County Building Code, which exempts fences 6 feet and under from a building permit, provided a masonry wall also sits back from the street at least its own height. Taller fences, walls closer to the street, and retaining walls over 4 feet need a permit, and any fence above the zoning height limits requires Planning Commission approval through site plan and architectural review first.
🚦
Corner Lots & Sight Lines
Corner and reversed corner lots must keep a vision clearance triangle open where the front and side lot lines meet, measured 15 feet back along each line. No fence, wall, hedge, or shrub taller than 42 inches above established grade may sit inside it. Outside the triangle and behind the required front yard, a 6-foot fence may run along the street-side property line.
Good to Know
If your home is part of an HOA, check your community's CC&Rs before installing — many HOAs add their own material and height rules on top of the City's. Building a pool or spa? California's Pool Safety Act (Health & Safety Code §115922–115923) requires at least two independent, approved drowning-prevention features, such as a 60-inch enclosure. Fence codes can change, so we always recommend confirming current requirements with the Walnut Community Development Department before you start. Have questions about your property? Contact Legacy Fence and we'll help you sort it out.
