A few things to consider before you install a fence in Long Beach. These are general guidelines — always confirm current requirements with the City before you start.

Front Yard Height
Fences and garden walls in the front yard are limited to 3 feet. In neighborhoods the City has designated as special fence height areas you may go to 4 feet, but only if that extra foot is open material such as wrought iron or chain link so the view through stays clear.

Side & Rear Yard Height
Side and rear yards allow a fence or garden wall up to 6 feet 6 inches, which covers a standard privacy fence comfortably. That rises to 8 feet where the fence abuts an alley or public right-of-way, a nonresidential property, or a major arterial, and to 10 feet outside the required yard areas altogether.

When You Need a Permit
Whether you need a building permit depends on the material: wood, chain link, and wrought iron fences need one above 6 feet 6 inches, while concrete, masonry, and brick walls need one above 4 feet. Barbed wire is not allowed, a shared boundary wall requires a common property line agreement, and homes in historic districts also need a Certificate of Appropriateness.

Corners require a cut-off area of at least 6 feet by 6 feet where sight lines stay open. Nothing may be built or allowed to grow there in a way that blocks visibility between 3 and 8 feet in height, and solid fencing is held to 3 feet, though chain link and wrought iron may go higher when the view through is genuinely unobstructed.

If your home is part of an HOA, check your community's CC&Rs before installing — many HOAs add their own material and height rules on top of the City's. Building a pool or spa? California's Pool Safety Act (Health & Safety Code §115922–115923) requires at least two independent, approved drowning-prevention features, such as a 60-inch enclosure.
