Local Guidelines
Fence Rules & Permits in San Marino, CA

A few things to consider before you install a fence in San Marino. These are general guidelines — always confirm current requirements with the City before you start.

📏
Front Yard Height
San Marino sets front-yard fence and wall height by Area District: 4 feet in Districts III through VII and 5 feet 6 inches in Districts I and II, always set back at least 18 inches from the front property line. Opacity steps down with height: solid up to 3 feet, 50 percent open from 3 to 3 feet 6 inches, and 75 percent open above that. Chain link and wire fencing are prohibited in front and street-facing side yards.
🧱
Side & Rear Yard Height
Side and rear yard fences and walls may be built to 6 feet, with pilasters and gates allowed 6 inches more. On a corner lot abutting a key lot, the limit drops to 4 feet within 20 feet of the side street line, and the same cap applies within 20 feet of a front street line abutting an alley. Where a lot sits more than 2 feet above an alley, a side or rear fence may rise to 12 feet.
📋
When You Need a Permit
A fence permit from the City is required before building any fence or wall in San Marino. Side and rear fences not facing a street are approved by the Planning and Building Department when they meet code, but any fence or wall along a street goes to the Design Review Committee, which must find it compatible with the house and the block. Front-yard retaining walls are capped at 4 feet and need weep holes every 10 feet.
🚦
Corner Lots & Sight Lines
San Marino does not publish a numeric sight triangle. Instead, every street-facing fence must preserve sight lines as a condition of its permit, and the Design Review Committee may require a greater setback than the standard 18 inches from a street-facing property line where safety calls for it. On corner lots next to a key lot, fences within 20 feet of the side street line are held to 4 feet.
Good to Know
If your home is part of an HOA, check your community's CC&Rs before installing — many HOAs add their own material and height rules on top of the City's. Building a pool or spa? California's Pool Safety Act (Health & Safety Code §115922–115923) requires at least two independent, approved drowning-prevention features, such as a 60-inch enclosure. Fence codes can change, so we always recommend confirming current requirements with the San Marino Planning and Building Department before you start. Have questions about your property? Contact Legacy Fence and we'll help you sort it out.
