A few things to consider before you install a fence in La Verne. These are general guidelines — always confirm current requirements with the City before you start.

Front Yard Height
La Verne keeps front yards at 3 feet: no fence, wall, or hedge in the front yard may exceed 36 inches in agricultural, residential, or commercial zones, whether it is solid or open. In the Hillside Development Overlay, walls facing a public road are capped at 5 feet and must sit at least 5 feet behind the right-of-way, with front-yard walls still limited to 3 feet.

Side & Rear Yard Height
Side and rear yards may be fenced up to 6 feet. Where neighboring lots differ in elevation by more than 2 feet along the shared line, the fence or wall may reach an overall 8 feet measured from the lower side; with 2 feet or less of difference, height is measured from the higher ground. In the hillside overlay a retaining wall may be 6 feet and a combined retaining-plus-privacy wall up to 12 feet.

When You Need a Permit
La Verne requires a fence permit from the Community Development Department for any fence or wall 3 feet or taller, with the fee set by council resolution. A building permit is also required for any fence or wall that abuts a public right-of-way or that serves in any part as a retaining structure, and work along the right-of-way must also meet the street encroachment rules in Section 12.04.010.

Corner Lots & Sight Lines
Corner lots may run a 6-foot fence, hedge, or wall along the street-side property line, except inside the corner cut-off areas, and within 10 feet on either side of a driveway approach the street-side fence drops to 3 feet. Where alleys intersect, a triangle joining points 10 feet from the corner must stay under 3 feet. On a reverse corner lot nothing over 3 feet is allowed in the required front yard or street-side yard.

If your home is part of an HOA, check your community's CC&Rs before installing — many HOAs add their own material and height rules on top of the City's. Building a pool or spa? California's Pool Safety Act (Health & Safety Code §115922–115923) requires at least two independent, approved drowning-prevention features, such as a 60-inch enclosure.
