Local Guidelines
Fence Rules & Permits in Temple City, CA

A few things to consider before you install a fence in Temple City. These are general guidelines — always confirm current requirements with the City before you start.

📏
Front Yard Height
Temple City caps a solid, view-obscuring front-yard fence or wall at 36 inches, or 42 inches if it is open such as picket or wrought iron. A 6-foot fence is allowed only where it sits no closer to the front lot line than the house or garage. Front and street-side retaining walls max out at 3 feet, with any fence on top open and set back 3 feet. Chain link is prohibited in front and street-side yards.
🧱
Side & Rear Yard Height
Outside the front yard and the driveway visibility area, walls, fences and security gates may be built to 6 feet, measured from the highest adjacent grade, and a retaining wall of up to 3 feet beneath the fence is not counted toward that limit. Chain link is allowed in rear and interior side yards, but barbed wire, razor wire, spiked wrought iron and electrified fences are prohibited on residential property.
📋
When You Need a Permit
Temple City requires a Zoning Clearance for fences and walls from the Planning Division before construction, which confirms height, location and material against the zoning code. Building and Safety reviews structural items separately, so masonry walls, retaining walls and anything over the standard fence height should be run past the Building Division for plan check before work begins.
🚦
Corner Lots & Sight Lines
Temple City uses corner cutbacks: at a street or alley intersection the cutback is 15 feet along each property line (17 feet on irregular lots), and at driveways it is 10 feet. Solid fences inside a cutback are limited to 36 inches and open-work fences to 42 inches. On a corner side yard, a driveway visibility triangle drawn at 45 degrees from the street line to a point 10 feet up the driveway edge is also held to 36 inches.
Good to Know
If your home is part of an HOA, check your community's CC&Rs before installing — many HOAs add their own material and height rules on top of the City's. Building a pool or spa? California's Pool Safety Act (Health & Safety Code §115922–115923) requires at least two independent, approved drowning-prevention features, such as a 60-inch enclosure. Fence codes can change, so we always recommend confirming current requirements with the Temple City Community Development Department before you start. Have questions about your property? Contact Legacy Fence and we'll help you sort it out.
